Contra Costa Canal Project

Bureau of Land Management

Location: Oakley, California

Summary: The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and Contra Costa Water District jointly implemented the Contra Costa Canal Replacement Project which consisted of installing up to 3.97 miles (approximately 21,000 feet) of buried ten-foot diameter pipeline in place of the existing unlined portion of the Contra Costa Canal (Canal) between the Rock Slough Fish Screen and Pumping Plant No. 1 within the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation 300-foot wide Canal right-of-way.
Construction included clearing and grubbing of the work area, isolation of the Canal, dewatering of groundwater in the work area and disposal on nearby land, installation of buried pipeline, bypass pumping in the Canal around the work area to provide needed water supply, and final grading and restoration of the project site. To comply with federal and state regulatory requirements, various wildlife and fisheries surveys were required during construction. Additionally, fish rescue and relocation activities were performed during the duration of construction.

NASA Ames Research Center Remediation

NASA Ames Research

Location: Santa Clara, California

Summary: NASA Ames Research Center is a research center at Moffett Federal Airfield in Silicon Valley. The facility is located over part of a former Superfund site. The former Superfund site is affected in part by soil and groundwater contamination from four Superfund sites located to the south of U.S. 101 in the vicinity of former semiconductor companies. NASA Ames also had several sites of contamination associated with past NASA activities. In association with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Regional Water Quality Control Board, NASA Ames committed to the remediation of these areas which included coastal wetland habitats containing the federally endangered saltmarsh harvest mouse. Prior to remediation efforts, wetland vegetation removal occurred along with the relocation of the saltmarsh harvest mouse.

Montara Sanitary District - Line C

California Coastal Commission

Location: Montara/Half Moon Bay, California

Summary: The Montara Water & Sanitary District (District) is responsible for maintaining approximately twenty-five miles of sewer line and thirteen pump stations. Sewage is pumped through a large intertie pipeline to the sewage treatment plant located in Half Moon Bay. Infrastructure maintenance was identified along a large segment of an existing pipeline (Line C). Repair activities associated with the pipeline occurred within the California Coastal Commission’s Coastal Development zone and involved sensitive wetland and riparian habitats harboring several special-status species. Additional activities involved an extensive evaluation of future well sites to augment the water demands of these coastal communities.
