Rock Slough Fish Screen Retrofit

Contra Costa Water District

Location: Contra Costa County, California

Summary: The Rock Slough Fish Screen was constructed on the Rock Slough Intake upstream of a pumping plant owned and operated by the Contra Costa Water District. The fish screen structure was designed to minimize the entrainment of fish (primarily salmonids) associated with the diversion of water from the Sacramento/San Joaquin River delta.

Carmel River Restoration Project

Monterey Peninsula Water Management District

Location: Monterey County, California

Summary: The Monterey Peninsula Water Management District (District) facilitated joint agency permitting actions allowing the District to conduct river restoration activities within a 17.6-mile segment of the Carmel River from the Pacific Ocean to the Sleepy Hollow area. Permitting efforts allowed for the: (1) maintenance or repairs of existing erosion protection, fisheries enhancement, and river restoration projects built under the previous authorization; (2) new erosion protection (bioengineering), fisheries enhancement, and river restoration projects; (3) restoration planting that involves the use of mechanized equipment for trenching and fill below ordinary high water; (4) mechanized removal of vegetation and debris from the active channel of the Carmel River where these obstructions could create impediments to flow and increase bank erosion hazards; and (5) new projects resulting from changing conditions on the river, or proposed by private property owners wishing to do erosion protection (bioengineering) and/or restoration work.

San Clemente Dam Removal

Cal America Water District

Location: Monterey County, California

Summary: The San Clemente Dam removal project is to date, the largest dam removal project in California. Once blocked and disengaged, the Carmel River is now free flowing allowing steelhead to access over 25 miles of spawning and rearing habitat in the upstream watershed. Additionally, sediment can now continue downstream to naturally replenish the Carmel River system. Our involvement started in the early 1990s with Mr. Olberding being involved in the initial assessment of impacts to aquatic, wildlife, and cultural resources associated with the removal of the dam structure and restoration of the river.

Services Provided: Environmental Assessment and Feasibility, Section 404 Clean Water Act Jurisdictional Delineation, Environmental Permitting, Cultural and Historic Resource Coordination, and Endangered Species Act Consultation.
